I have not driven the car for a couple of days trying to catch my gremlin off guard so it shows itself again May need a big puddle but all the issues started to get less frequent which is just wrong! Things get worse not better on their own at least that is my previous experience.
I know I have had some sage advice on this forum already but I am a little surprised by the capricious nature of this fault. Why would swapping the MAF make it happen less often, there maybe a leak somewhere but I feel there is something else at play here like oil gathering at a low point and then suddenly moving and causing a sensor to misread or something weird like that. I will have a look to see if the turbo drain pipe mod was done earlier on its life.
I had a look to see if I could find when it last had a cambelt change no record seems to exist so at the earliest it should need doing in September of this year.
My father said would I lend it to him for the annual trip to Norway to take all the fishing gear. The reason being the freezer will fit in it and I can wire the inverter to work in it. So I have 2 months to get it reliable for 1600 miles of driving in 4 days and then the same a week later.
I think we might be close to achieving that with a little bit of luck.

Spotted an oil leak now. Not too serious yet but definitely evidence on the drive. Another investigation required.

Yesterday we went 130 miles. On the route out we went motorway then main road very congested then little twisty road. At the end of the twisty but relatively fluid road while easing up to the junction out went the car on restricted performance. Immediately reset immediately returned, immediately rest, did not return for rest of day. I can see a hairline crack / bad seal could cause this, so could a sticky actuator. Smoke test called for.
It is very good when it works properly. Really quite impressed with it.

So while trying to see how high up the engine the oil leak is i took the engine cover off and noticed that a little pipe that enters the back of the elbow that connects the intercooler pipe with the throttle body had split and become detached. I reattached it and wondered if a little pipe like that being free to the outside world could be causing the leak that occasionally causes it to go into restricted performance. That pipe is from the Turbocharger to the elbow and misses the intercooler completely. it has a diameter of about 6mm internal and is also quite oily so it could just be why it was only occasionally going into RP. The spares company call it a Turbo Boost Pipe LR084276. Of course it could just be wishful thinking on my part!

News we believe the oil is coming from the seal between the same elbow and the throttle body. Two little leaks in that area could be where my RP issues come from fingers crossed.

160 miles today zero faults. I think I detected a slight change in acceleration. It feels smoother with less harshness particularly after an hour or so of driving. It also seemed to accelerate the same each time you depressed the accelerator. Before I think it would sometimes accelerate very quickly and others it felt like like there was not quite everything on tap. Again this is more of an impression than a statement of fact, you know you are trying to detect any little hint that might give a steer on what the fault maybe. Anyway I can say for sure that I am enjoying my adventures with it so far.

We have had one more restricted performance occurrence followed by 450+ miles of no reoccurrence. I think that is the furthest it has gone without a problem since I have had it.

I didn't do a smoke test personally but the garage said they could find no evidence of a split manifold. They did find an o ring seal that had a leak.
It is definitely an ongoing adventure. A friend of mine when I asked how he had got on with his Range Rover said the last three had never gone wrong and he had driven each of them 100,000 miles. I think her was just born lucky.
Over the years I have owned a few.
The first was a Series 3 90" pretty good needed two clutch master cylinders, stolen and burnt out;
Then a silver Range Rover with a Daihatsu diesel mated to a Discovery gearbox truly a dreadful idea, gearbox broke every 3-4 months, went to big off roading competition fan;
Turbo Technics Range Rover , quite good this one put about 100,000 miles on it no major faults occasional work required.
LSE Range Rover bought for me but my father took this and it did 180,000 before it was retired, definitely not perfect but a very good vehicle issues with air suspension, and kept needing new upper tailgates.
Then strayed from the Land Rover fold for 11 years I had a Hyundai Terracan for 150,000 miles again not perfect but pretty good, two head gaskets one at 100,000 miles another at 180,000 miles.
Current Discovery 4 very good now it mostly works but boy has it had a terrible time before this, when I first got it battery management system issue, turbo vacuum pipe plumbing issue, needed new wheel bearing and control arms, and intake air leak issues and water fuel alarm issues.

You'll get there. When sorted they are great beasties However, I would still do a smoke test. Manifold cracks aren't always easy to see. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Now i have been informed by the dashboard that a service is required. As the MOT is due next week this is perfect timing. I have a couple of hundred miles to do over the weekend and then it can have a service. Hopefully two hundred miles is not overdoing it. I assume it is not that critical or am I very wrong. Since it has done wait for it 5,000 miles since its MOT last year and I have done 2,300 of those in the last two months I think it is probably a 12 month trigger. The timing belts should be changed in September, which is a pain because it has done about 136,500 miles in total. When it was seven it had 65,000 miles on the clock and it made 100,000 miles at about 10 years old. In theory it would have had the cambelts changed at 7 years. Examining the MOT record suggests because of jumps in month tested that it changed hands at years 5 and 55,000 miles and year 10 years and about 107,000 miles.
I asked the former owner if they knew when it last had a cambelt change but they did not come back to me about a date. I think that means they didn't do one. It had its MOT in February of 2016 at 65,000 miles and then in February 2017 at more or less 78,000 miles. That would suggest to me that it was being serviced about once a year in probably February which in all likelihood means the Cambelts need changing in about 7 months. Am I over thinking this? I will probably have done about another 10,000 miles by then so it will be at 147,000 miles. I think that should be OK don't you?

So the former owner got back to me he said the cambelts were done at 106,254 that was just before he owned it and was in 2019. So Cambelts are now not on my list of things that need doing at least for now!
We have now done 540 miles since the last Restricted Performance... Booked in for MoT and Service on 8th June

Went through its MoT needed new brake lines. Also one of new suspension arms already showing some signs of wear on a bush and pin, being replaced under warranty.

On the way back from seeing father 160 mile round trip, I said to Kim that we hadn't had restricted performance in a while. I think it is about 600 miles now.
