3 sets of front discs in 12 months!!

Morning all,

April last year, i had 4 new Scorpion tyres fitted at a KwiKFit, a few days later i was getting wobbles from the front end... Mainly light breaking from 70mph but at lower speeds too, though under 30mph cant feel it, and if you break harder it seems less noticeable, feels to me like its NSF.

- i took the car to another tyre place and had wheel re-balanced, felt OK for a few days but then wobble returned so i took to another place who confirmed that all wheels are perfectly balanced, seemed ok again for a few days and then wobble comes back.

- Next steps i changed front discs and pads for Brembo kit - all sorted! - for a few thousand miles, then gradually the wobble returned.

- swapped out the Brembo's for another set of discs and pads, all good again for 3 or so thousand miled and it starts again...

- Swapped out again but this time with Bendix discs and pads as recommended by my local Indy, i'd had them take a look to see if they could see why they were warping or juddering.

again after 3 or 4 thousand miles, in the past few days, the wobble is back and annoying as hell, surely i can't keep throwing new discs and pads at it?

Car is MY62 SDV6 with 103k on the clock, lower arms were changed at 70k, mainly motorway use so not worked hard offroad, no knocks or bumps from underneath, when i fit new bits, all surfaces are minty fresh clean, each new set of discs and pads i have bedded them in per mfr instruction and best practice off the web - also never sit with my foot on the pedal after breaking from any kind of speed, i engage EPB and neutral.

One theory i do have, when KwiKfit changed the tyres originally over a year ago, my wheel nuts had swollen and they probably had to smack a socket on there to get them off. Is it possible that the hub is bent which means that over time and possibly after a few occasional hard breaking stops that the discs get bent again?

Check your wheel bearings, even if no play they could be worn, also check the lower ball joints, as some new arms where fitted with sub standard joints that failed after a short while.

Have you got any cover with Warranty Direct? They paid for both front bearings to be replaced on mine.

I worked out (roughly), based on the circumference of the bearings and the mileage of the car at the time, that they'd have rotated in excess of 500 million times. So not surprising that they needed replaced.

Wheel bearings have no play, nor any rumble, bottom joints seem fine too. Lower arms were original LR parts. It all seems 'good' aside of this effin disc issue.

I love that you worked that out! - quote impressive numbers too Wink
I did have WD cover till a year ago, binned it off as it got to 100k as they cover less and less stuff.
Don't mind paying for stuff, just can't quite put my finger on whats causing it!

Out of interest, after they changed the bearing / hub, how long ago was that and have you had issues since?

I once had exactly the same issue years ago with a Volvo 760, nobody could figure out what was causing the problem and after about 4 sets of quality replacement front discs, someone suggested fitting genuine Volvo discs, problem solved.

It made no sense whatsoever, as the discs that I had fitted were all well known brands like Brembo etc but the only thing that cured the problem was by using genuine parts ??? Now before someone jumps in and says that genuine Volvo discs are made by Brembo or A.N. Other, I know that, I am only relating to you my personal experience of the same problem albeit with a different make of car, a problem that had quite a few seasoned mechanics and a Volvo Specialist scratching their heads.

Have read this through a couple of times now, had very similar and a n/s front driveshaft was worn, replaced and all good, it had ruined fairly new discs recently fitted.

The symptons escalated over about two weeks.

Is the wear equal on both sides of the old discs when taken off?- if not more pressure is being put on one side of the disc than the other magnifying bearing wear, this could point to the calliper slider pins.
Have you checked for disc run out while the discs are still on the car?- there are specialist companies that can skim the disc whilst on the car, there is one I know of in Leicester, I don’t know if this is poss on a Discovery with 4 wheel drive, might be cheaper to just fit new bearings.
103k miles is a good mileage for front wheel bearings and they must be getting ready.Thumbs Up

Agreed, makes no sense but not sure i want to pay stealer costs for parts and then it does it again in a few months Smile

Cheers, What bit of the driveshaft gets worn? Surely if its bolted into the hub it has no movement?

Well.... the discs have no wear to measure as they seem to get wrecked so quickly!! The caliper sliders are all free and lubed, piston winds back in fine and no corrosion on anything so far short of buying new calipers not sure. Also, if there was a sticking caliper or pad, i'd think that disc would have to get bloody hot to warp and therefore id expect some heat colouring on the disc surface. There is none....

I think looking at the cost of the hub / bearing, they look easy enough to swap so i may just do that.

It was about 2 years ago. No problems since.

Bit of an update on this.

Read somewhere else of a guy called Marcus at Diskskimmers.com so gave him a bell and had a chat.

He asked me if my wheels had been powder coated, which they had, and after that my wheels hadn't been removed off the car until KwiKFit did 4 new tyres....

So, theory is that they stick 4 wheels back on in random order and do them up with an air gun causes an uneven / unequal sitting of the wheel to disc surface and thus when new discs and pads are fitted they feel lovely, but in fact they are creating uneven wear on the discs (DTV)

Makes sense actually thinking about it so i'm going to book in, get my discs skimmed and wheel hub faces looked at and corrected. Will report back.

You cannot feel the worn driveshaft via the hub. The driveshaft when worn moves sideways and is checked when vehicle was off the ground on a four point lift not a ramp.

There is some movement to allow for fitting when new but needs an experienced workshop to diagnose if worn.

Its pretty obvious when shown though, it rattles around but is not excessive and you only experience the symptons you describe.

I think this is your problem if all else is covered?

If you read back through my posts, you will see that my D4 has been plagued with brake wobble from new.

It’s had quite a few new sets of pads and disks.

Last lot I fitted Britpart discs and stripped the callipers. Mine had the slide pins with the rubber buffers on. These were tight and could possibly have been making the brake bind slightly, overheating the disk, and causing the pad to burn the surface. I lubricated the rubbers with a silicone grease and they slid much easier afterwards.

So far so good on this set of disks!
