I've just had the same done (2006 m/y), i didn't know there was a problem until my car went in for it's first service & the dealer told me that they need replacing.

I sure i have read of quite a few D3's having this done recently

You put Saloon car steering components on a 2.7T 4x4, this is what you get Rolling Eyes

Mine goes in on Monday for this job to get done. All under warranty. It was the dealer who pointed it out to me, as I never noticed anything wrong with the steering.

all fixed now, with new balljoints & steering shaft. This vibration issue came on pretty quickly from new on both vehicles. I got most vibration over rough surfaces & going into pot holes etc, and also under braking & turning corners. First time I took this vehicle in the dealer said they could not find an issue. So I took a mechanic out to a part of the city nearby with cobbled streets, he was in no doubt there was a problem after that excursion....

I live about a 3/4 mile down a rough pot holed track, if there is anything loose I find it pretty quickly. Laughing

Does anybody know if ball-joints and/or steering shafts are replaced with stronger ones?
I have a 'clattering' sound from the front when going over small bumps or a rough field.
Might be the same problem. 2005 TDV6, 30.000 km.

regards,
Thomas

For 2005MY there is a TSB out (search the forum - unfortunately I do not have time at work) 'if the driver reports knocking at the front end'. I sent mine in for that, but I am told they actually had to replace quite a lot more - waiting for the report.

Of course I spoke too soon, second journey has revealed the 'clatter' is back, not as bad or frequently as previously, but still there. To be honest I cant be bothered taking it back again, as I am going to PX the car soon.

I had all the above done way back.Unfortuneately thers still a prominent wobble , feedback at anything over 60 mph.Ive had laser tracking , balancing carried out independently as I thought this was the culprit but to no avail.Im pretty sure the steering rack , ball joints were replaced at about 50 K approx and TBH at that point I hadn't any issues.Im in for my final service under warranty on Monday and will add it to my list of concerns.

I had the tie arms and ball joints done yesterday, what a difference it's made to the drive. A 'lot' sharper turn in and feels a bit more solid on the road. Steering and change of direction feels like new (I suppose it is really Rolling Eyes )

Feeling a bit embarrassed that I never noticed it myself Embarassed
