255 55 20 tyres rub?

Hi all,

I’ve a set of genuine LR alloys with Grabber AT3 tyres. I’ve used them on a previous D5.

I trial fitted one to the front of my 2016 D4 and upon turning the wheel heard it catch or rub on the wheel arch liner.

I’ve read a number of threads of people saying they run this size and no one has mentioned problems

So, should they fit OK? Is there something different about late model wheel arches that mean these rub?

Thanks

Are you sure it’s not rubbing on the chassis leg?
As late model D3s and all D4s have had an additional extrusion added to the chassis at the front end.
This is primarily to avoid wheel intrusion to the forward cabin in light of frontal impact.
Because of that, wider tyres on later models can rub on this chassis leg.
Hence the reason you have some Discos that experience rubbing and others that don’t.
Prior to my first D4 I ran 285/50/20 on my MY05 D3 with no rubbing, but when I fitted them to my MY11 D4, I had rubbing issues ….. until ProSpeed came up with a solution.

Steering rack lock-stops are available (via ProSpeed - engineered from my old D4) that should prevent rubbing, but do limit steering input, particularly in tight manoeuvres.

255/50/20 or 275/45/20 are tyre sizes that could be fitted to these later models without rubbing.
But (as a disclaimer) you do need to check for yourself.

If not the solution, I hope this is of some help.

It was rubbing on the front of the inside of the wheel arch plastic, not on a chassis leg.

The current tyres on it are 275 45 20. The extra width doesn’t rub, I think it’s the extra depth/height of the sidewall.

I ran 275/45/21’s on my D4 without any rubbing.
