22" wheels on my D3 ??
Hi everyone. I have just bought a D3 which is sort of inbetween D3/4 as it has the bodywork and lights of a D4 but was registered in March 2008.
The 2 front wheels are 275/40/ZR22 108Y XL Accelera Iota
The 2 rear wheels are 275/40/22 108 Continental Cross Contact LX Sport
I am taking it in to my independent local and trustworthy tyre dealer to sort out a balance problem as the steering wheel tremors at 40-50mph. There is still about 6mm of tread on each one.
I have no idea why there are 22 inch wheels on it other than previous owners choice but just wondered what people think about the safety of this option. I use 75% road and 25% off road on my squelchy fields when I'm seeing to the animals. It seems to handle well apart from the tremor which I hope will be sorted tomorrow. Many thanks, Helen.

well the first thing is that 108 weight rated tyres aren't high enough for the D3, needs to be 111 (although a few of us have run 110's)
Second point is Accelera are crap tyres.
Third point is who's 22's are they, if aftermarket the alloys 1) might also not be weight rated high enough (you should be looking for a min of 900Kg, or better still 940kg) and the center bore might be a bit too big (so a cenetring ring needed, quite a common cause of wheel wobble over 50mph)
I ran Genuine LR 21's on my D4 but dont think I'd go bigger than that.
just my penn-o-worth

Many thanks Al. I may be looking for new alloys it seems. Any suggestions of where to buy from ?
IMHO totally wrong wheels & tyres for your intended use.
Your should be able to buy a decent set of 18" wheels here for a fair price, and fit appropriate tyres.
If pushed I could find a set of 5 suitable 18" wheels & tyres - but I'm not desperate to sell.

I have 2 sets of wheels and tyres for sale, one are 21" and the other 20", but would suggest the 20" would suit your motor best.
Both have Pirelli All season tyres fitted.
Should you be interested, let me know.

25% offroad is still 25% offroad.. 20"or even bigger, far to big for offroad MHO
18"also much comfortable drive onroad..
now we can wait for responders telling their 21" drive very good off-road 8)Best regards

My tyre man says the alloys are ok if a strange choice. They are not genuine LR but some aftermarket ones. He says they are safe which is the main thing. Wheels balanced now, one was wildly out apparently. No more wobble. I will look at new 20" alloys and tyres when it comes to the tyres needing replacing which will probably be in about 6 months I think.
Having read comments on this forum re new owners and things to watch out for I have booked an automatic transmission oil change / gasket etc for next week as I couldn't find any details of that having been done. The oil pump upgrade and timing belt were done in October in the service / MOT before I bought it - but that was on the original engine. I will need to check if the timing belt was replaced on this newer engine that was fitted last wee k( see my other post for post purchase disaster lol)
My D3 has done 110K on an 08 plate and I want to keep it for as long as I can so I am anxious to make sure I do all the right things to look after it properly.
Thanks for everyones help so far, Helen.

OK, so just one more thing - have you declared to your insurer that you are running non-standard wheels and tyres - you need to, otherwise your insurance could be invalid. Some insurers are OK, but you may have to pay a small increase, others dont like any sort of modifications from standard build. Even 20's are non standard on a D3 as the D3 was never availible from LR with 20's, 19's were the largest alloys fitted. 20's were fitted to D4.

108 might ... emphasis on might ... be ok as they are smaller sidewall and bigger footprint. What are 21" standard fit? 107 springs to mind..
