2016 EU6 Compliant D4s - Adblue - Good or Bad ?

I believe that the 2016 MY D4s will be fitted with an engine compliant with EU6, which will require Adblue injection into the exhaust manifold.

(Adblue is also know as Diesel exhaust fluid or DEF)

I believe the Adblue tank will be c. 17 litres; does anyone know:-

1. The probable consumption rate of Adblue, possibly as a percentage of fuel consumption.

2. The cost per litre of Adblue, and how easy it is to obtain.

I understand that Adblue is sensitive to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. It will freeze if its temperature falls below -11°C, and the urea content can decrease if stored at temperatures in excess of 30°C.

Allegedly Adblue is not harmed by the freezing process and once thawed will retain its concentration and quality.

My concern is about buying & using Adblue in areas where the temperature is frequently in excess of 30°C (Greece, Spain etc), how can one ensure that Adblue purchased at filling stations has not been stored at over 30°C.

More particularly do LR position the Adblue tank in area of the D4 where the temperature won't exceed 30°C, and if not what is the effect if this temperature is regularly & frequently exceeded?

I've found an answer to the question of where to find AdBlue (which seems to be spelt with a capitalB).

The answer is that there are not many outlets, that you need a fuel card at some.

In my case none of my preferred local filling stations stock AdBlue.

In other countries the situation is appalling - in Greece there is only one outlet in Athens, and Portugal only has 4 outlets!

Have a look at the FindAdBlue site here:-

http://www.findadblue.com/

As far as pricing goes the above site states:-

Quote:
AdBlue is used by the SCR system at a rate equivalent to 5% of diesel consumption and is currently less than half the price of diesel, per litre.

So the 17 litre tank will last about as long as 340 litres of diesel at say 9km per litre that equates to c. 3060 km or 1,900 miles - not very far.

If you run out of Abblu, does the engine stop or can you just carry on regardless?

If you run out of AdBlue the engine may stop, but it certainly won't restart.

Here's someone's experience with an Audi:-

Quote:
Topped up the Adblue yesterday & thought I'd share my experience.

Having read online I used the site http://www.findadblue.com/ to find a garage that had a pump / stocked adblue.

I initially tried the pump but it didn't work - the adblue simply splashed back out so it is clearly only for trucks despite having read a few posts online that indicated you could use a pump. The garage did however sell 10 litre bottles which came with a special nozzle - kind of has two tubes molded together, one big and one small. 10 litres cost £14.

Went home and poured the 10 litres straight in and the ad blue waring has now gone.

saw my first adblue pump yesterday and it was over by the HGV pumps. not seen one locally as this was near Shrewsbury.

surely only adds to running costs making the care less desirable?

AdBlue was a factor in me changing cars early, so that I don't end up with one with it:

Amazon are selling AddBlue for c. £20 for 10 litres - no doubt cheaper elsewhere.

Hopefully Steve at Advanced Factors will be able to supply at a good price?

It appears that there are, at present, 293 locations in the UK where you can buy AddBlue - none in The Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey though!

Mercedes take on it:
* Your vehicle’s AdBlue is topped up for free in its first year, prior to its first service, after that the top up service is completed free of charge when AdBlue is purchased from your local Mercedes-Benz Retailer
* Your vehicle’s AdBlue tank will be topped up each time your vehicle is serviced at an Approved Mercedes-Benz Retailer. One litre of AdBlue is sufficient for approximately 625 miles of driving and the size of the AdBlue tank has been designed so that you should not have to refill AdBlue between services. However, AdBlue consumption may be higher depending on the type of driving, mileage and road conditions.
* If a vehicle’s AdBlue tank runs empty and [car] fails to start, customers with Roadside Assistance cover will receive a free 4 litre AdBlue top up at the roadside.

Didn't I read somewhere I think it might have been on another thread on here. That truck drivers just p:censored:ss in a bottle and add that to the adBlue tank. Not sure if it was a hoax or not.

That would help marginally if the temperature is above 30c...if the comment above about the decreased urea content above that specific temperature are correct......
But I think it's more likely it's just to get the warning light to go out Whistle

Probably more than 17kg when you add the tank, filler, plumbing, pump and the SCR injection system. I understand that JLR had to delete the option of rear AC because of the additional weight of the AdBlu system.

We use AdBlue in one of the Massey Ferguson Tractors - we get it from our local Agri Store in 20/25 (can't remember) litre drums, pretty sure it would be the same spec to use in a Disco...
