2012 8 speed box D4 vs RRS

having just read a locked thread on the new 8 speed box and taking delivery of mine in a couple of weeks i am wondering if the owners of RR Sports have the same issues? i am led to beleive that the 2012 RRS and the latest D4 share the same mechanicals........

No issues with the 8 speed thanks, bootiful. Cancelling the paddles by going into sport and back to drive again when you have hit them by mistake is a teeny weeny gripe from me (go on, tell me there's another way Laughing ) Lovely lovely set up Thumbs Up I am sure the RRS and D4 will be sharing too.

I don't know what thread you refer to but as it is locked it can't be worth much going by our great moderation guys on here.

When I borrowed a 2012 RRS when our Disco 4 broke down after 1 day and 60 miles, I was very impressed!
The gearbox was smoother and so much more responsive!
My dealer told me the software on the RRS was different to the Disco, and when I asked if this programme could be applied to my Disco, he told me that LR would not allow it!
Pity, because it would have turned our Disco into a car I might enjoy driving, rather than the thing I am now stuck with for 3 years!

Just pull the right paddle for 2/3 seconds and it reverts to Drive.

England 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 Metropolis LE Auto Zermatt SilverDiscovery 3

Had MY12 RRS for 6 months now, after 5 years in D3 Metropolis.
I've found the 8 speed box to be slow if you drive too gently. Finally got used to giving the throttle a bit of more use rather than driving with the thought of saving fuel mode. Ie. old woman mode!
By more throttle pressure from cold it doesn't go into slow accelaration mode then the scolded cat for the rest of the journey.
Or maybe now its got a few more miles on its waking up.

I only have the 6 speed box on MY10 RRS but way better than the Disco2 auto - used to kick down screaming and revving but never went any faster Rolling with laughter

You might have hit on something there!
I have driven the disco today from cold and given it some welly when still cold leaving home.
The 11 mile journey to work was better than the car has driven for a long time! Seems smoother and more eager to change gear when you apply throttle pressure.
The car is outside the factory for the day now, so I will try the same procedure on the homeward journey and see if its still better.
Its a funny scenario, because on some days the car feels smooth and responsive (which it what I expected it to be) and other days it just feels sluggish and gets stuck in gears...
Maybe the car learns how you want to drive ift from cold, and that sets the scene fro the rest of the day!...

Had the 8 speed box for a week or so now and have driven at run in speed (sub 3000rpm) across Europe, but now past 5-600 miles I'm happy to open it up a bit. The box is utterly fantastic. It's incredibly smooth and very responsive. The paddles are superb for changing down (running in) but love them also for overtaking.

The MY 12 car is amazing. Can't believe people are talking about the MY 13 not having the twisty knob gear thingy. Again, it's great. Love it.

Had my MY12 for a couple of weeks now and I have to agree with Pagoda, the gearbox is fantastic. I don't suffer from any lag like has been mentioned, I don't know why maybe it's the way I drive it. I thought I wouldn't get used to the knob but can't see how I managed without it now and with the paddles it just makes a great car even better. As well as a few long journeys I've also done quite a few miles around the doors and helped out on a Kielder event last week. Around Kielder it was just escorting a number of cars around the tracks but most of it was at a moderately slow speed with the odd bit of low range thrown in there and it was just a pleasure to drive Thumbs Up

The 8 speed gearbox is currently only available with the 3.0l SDV6 diesel engine. Doubt it will become available in the US for some time.
