2007 Disco 3 with free labour warranty

Hi all

I am currently looking for a disco 3 for my dad as he needs something to comfortably tow 2 large horses and his current freelander 2 just isn’t any good for towing 2 large horses.

Budget is £6500 to £7500. However a big concern is the high maintenance costs with a disco 3 as he just can’t afford a 2k MOT bill or 1k for a failed air compressor etc, he’s not handy so won’t be able to do any work himself.

I have found a 2007 130k SE model in VGC with FSH = 14 stamps in the service book, timing belt just done(not sure if oil pump was done) its with Chris Frampton from CF Vehicles in Derby and they want £7895 for it. I know this is way above market value but....there is a big but! They are offering a free labour warranty for the life of the car while ever we own it. I am thinking that this will be a very good way to avoid some big bills that come with disco 3 ownership.

So was wondering what you guys think of this and if it’s a good deal for someone that can’t do any repair work themselves. Also, difficult question but how much of typical disco 3 maintenance do you guys think is is parts v labour? I am thinking approx 50-50, especially with things like rear suspension arms that could be a nightmare to remove! It will be towing a fair bit so I am expecting he will have to replace quite a few suspension components over time.

Look forward to your thoughts and comments!

Thanks

I’d be asking for a more in-depth breakdown of that warranty. It sounds good on the front! But id like to see what kind of get out clauses they have, or what it doesn’t cover etc.

If it’s a local garage that you can travel to for services/MOT’s etc - then it sounds like you could build a good long term relationship with them.

With all respect, a Discovery is not know for its reliability, if the thought of a £1k repair bill frightens him, then I'd suggest a Discovery is not the right car for him...

+1 what mikey say’s

If you want a LR of such an age.. 13 years and a lot of mls? . you need a budget of 10K to buy one arround 5k If you want some peace of mind....

Especially if you have no ability to repair things yourself....

Examples enough here.. a significant number of D3’s ruin their engines at that mileage... when it happens atleast 5k when outsourced or a write off off the same amount...

Bottomline
When budget is tight, you CAN end up with nothing rather quick......
Or you can be lucky... who knows... i wasn’t...... but had a buffer calculated and needed it... ( within the first 80 mls)
 Best regards
Harold

Thanks all for the responses. I guess what i am after is weather you guys think this is a good deal with the labour warranty, providing its all above board and there isn’t any nasty small print and secondly do you think the labour warranty will save much with the upkeep?

Thanks!

Is it an insurance backed warranty? If not the garage could close and it will be worth nothing

Me too. An alternator, and a couple of wiring issues

But the wear and tear has been horrific

And I deal with many Green Oval products. They don't all just need an alternator every 5 years Big Cry

I think it is a bad idea, in the context of your budget and means. There will be too many exclusions with free labour warranty, especially if you are tied to the vendor for repair work.

For around £5k you should be able to find a tidy sorted D3, as are occasionally offered by upgrading forum members. That leaves £3k contingency, or warranty cover. Focus on mechanical condition, rather than immaculate bodywork and luxury interior.
