It is not a straight swap . HID runs at a much higher voltage , so you need all the relevant electrickery as well . Having said that it is quite an easy DIY on a defender .. I assume a D3 should be similar

I thought it was a straight swap on the disco? Just make sure you don't get the adaptive units. The ordinary xenon headlights will drop right in place - (It's the whole unit though - obviously not just a bulb!)2005 D3 HSE 2011 D4 Landmark 2016 D4 HSE Lux

I stand corrected , but what about the higher voltage required by HID - won't you still need to fit the electrickery as well ?

No, fixed (non-adaptive) are a straight swap.
Adaptive lights require a control module which isn't fitted to non-adaptive models.

It's all included inside the actual headlight units.....it's a direct (although expensive) swap and if you have no other issues (see below) it should take around 30 minutes to get the new ones fitted and working.
You'll also need to add headlamps washer jets (legal requirement) if you're fitting bi-xenons (or any HID headlights over 2000 lumens) and your D3 doesn't already have them.
I assume you have air suspension? This is important to make sure you get the correct headlights (i.e. whether or not you need them with built-in automatic levelling or not).
