1st gear on manual gearbox difficult to engage |
|
My car is going in for its 45k service in a few weeks and i need some advice. First gear is difficult to engage sometimes and the car has to be put in another gear before going back to first. It has had the master cylinder replaced and a new clutch fitted by the dealer to try and rectify this problem but it is still there. Anyone come across this before?. All thoughts/ideas appreciated. 2018 D5 3.0 HSE Lux

Possibly the same as the difficult to engage reverse gear problem that's occurred on a few D3s (mine included and (unfortunately) it seems to be re-occurring about 20k after it was fixed) , plastic part at the base of the gear stick breaks up. Search the site and all should be revelled The End

Another thought could be that synchro isn't working on first. Having driven old an old Moggie and MG with no synchro on first for the last xy years, it's a standard driving reflex to "feel" second before slipping easily into first (ooh err missus )

Happens in mine, never really thought much about it because it was the same thing that happened in my previous vehicle (98 hilux surf)...find it quite difficult to put it in first and i think it might have to do at times with the fact that the vheicle might be going too fast for first gear..i find if i put it in second first, as you have stated which slows the vehicle even more, which it doesn't usually give a problem...

I get this a lot in mine. Always seems to happen when parked up on a slight incline. I usually release the handbrake and let it roll a couple of inches then it engages no problem. Never really considered it a problem.

Thanks for the replies. To clear up a few points - this happens at any time, stationary on level ground when the car is first started, changing down gears at traffic lights etc. I know a few of you state you didn't think of this as a problem, i have never had this on a previous car and the dealer must have thought it a problem do get the master cylinder and clutch changed under warranty. Keep the ideas coming please. 2018 D5 3.0 HSE Lux
