Are the tyres the correct circumference, if not this will effect odometer readings.

Its the standard 19s that came with the car, so i assume the computer should be ok.
No sign of fuel leak but i do feel when i take my foot off the gas some resistance, could it be the brake switch? or a binding brake? im going to clean out the air intake and change the 02 sensors.
I also think i would like to change glow plugs, im just a bit scared of doing this :/

Could be binding brakes, carefully check if they are getting hot. Plus you don’t say what kind of driving. Short trips in these temps would easily only get 18mpg.

Another question, as above how do you derive the 18mpg, trip comp or real calculation? If the former be aware that it can be 2 - 5 mpg over optimistic so reality could well be 13 - 16mpg.

Ignore the dash lie-o-meter and do the calculations yourself. Short journeys could mean you're not fully warmed up (min 10 mins) and so less efficient mpg can be expected.
Check the brake disc temps as above just to rule out any binding which will eat into mpg figure as well as discs, pads, calipers, amongst other components.

Yeh i will have a check, im wonderign if the parking break hasnt been done correcly, what temps should i expect on the pads?
Are you driving like you nicked it ? It's quite tempting but not very economical .

After a run with light braking they should all be similar, with little variation on one axle set. Typically, if you went for a run where little or no braking is required, you could expect to see around 50°c on the front discs and 35 - 45 on the rears.(unobstructed quiet stretch of road with very light braking)
If braking is unavoidable you want to see similar readings for each axle set. If one is much hotter than its opposite side there's a problem. One easy test is to find a flat level and smooth surface. (quiet car park) Put the car in drive and release the brake allowing the car to reach 5 mph. Then select neutral and staying off the brakes allow it to come to a stop naturally. It should do this very softly and with absolutely no sudden or sharp stopping, particularly right at the very end. If it wants to stop quickly and sudden, or the steering wheel is being pulled from the straight ahead, there is a problem.
If you can smell the brakes at a wheel after a run with little braking, that would also be an indication something is not right. Alternatively, jack up each corner and check the freewheel ability of each, but expect more resistance from the rears.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Mine only gets 7 mpg towing a 5 gang mower around cutting a 10 acre field at 10 mph.
Hour and a half later then......
Once removed seems like a Ferrari.

My short 5 mile commute in my d3 shows 22mpg on the lie o meter, knock off 10 percent and its only slightly better than your d4, and we are warmer down here.
Most I have ever seen is 30 cruising at 70 for 100 miles straight, again knock off 10 percent for an accurate figure.
