1200 miles of towing

Well - what a towcar. Just back from France after just over 1200 miles with a twin axle Abbey Spectrum caravan on the back, and the D3 never missed a beat. Comfortable- relaxed, missus and 3 kids quiet - what more can I ask for (OK a lottery win would be nice)

Hills - what hills (well maybe a drop from 6th to 5th just to hold 65mph) - 22mpg, not too bad.

rock steady, even with idiot french truck drivers moving over on me.

Permagrin well and truely stuck in place.

Al - just returned from 2 weeks touring the south coast in my Disco and Abbey Aventura, just shy of 800 miles. Just like you never missed a beat, reasonable mpg, loads of room for 5 people, 2 dogs and numerous stuff the kids just have to have.
Slight scare when the wife bumped a kerb at speed and then lost control for a second Shocked !!!

Got talking to a local in Weymouth who had just got his FFRR back from the garage after putting too much diesel into the petrol tank.... he now wants a disco3!

Hills are great aren't they, I've had a number of caravans come past me as I stick to 60mph, the next hill sees the D3 fly past like the hill wasn't there 8)

Living in Aberdeenshire any holiday involves a great deal of towing! I've just done 1400 miles to Dorset and back and the Disco was fantastic, I'm towing a twin axle Sprite fully loaded and you hardly notice it is there. I've just done 400 miles round trip to Oban and yet again the car was superb.

The only thing I have noticed is that small vans have the greatest effect on the caravan when passing as opposed to big trucks. Maybe the way the caravan is loaded, I don't know.

Going up hills overtaking the crawlers is Laughing

Towing.

In June and July my wife and I went to Austria via France and Germany than back to west coast of France. 2,700 miles altogether. Diesel Comsumption ranged from 18 to 22 mpg with 1700 kg caravan on the back. 22 mpg when averaging about 40mph on autobahns, 18 mpg on other roads, when averaging about 30 mph. Tried all sorts of brands of fuel from supermarkets to Esso and Total , from just under one Euro a litre to 1. 16 Euros. Found little differnce. Agree with the comments re small vans causing more turbulance than big artics.
THe D3 goes up hills like the hills are not there. However did find that with really steep hills the viscous fan locked in with a lot of noise, but soon went.

Just came back from towing a 1.5t camper from Sunshine Coast on Aust East coast to Broome on the west coast and back. Total of about 12000km (7500miles) in 4 weeks. Averaged about 13l/100km for entire trip. Increased up to about 17.5l/100km when doing about 125km/h pushing into a strong headwind in Central Australia. Trip included about 800km (500miles) of rough corrugated dirt tracks through the Kimberley in WA.

All up a good trip, D3 TDV6 towed brilliantly, no problems except for a cracked windscreen on the 2nd day of the trip. Would strongly recommend the TDV6 for towing anytime

Towing 1700kg caravan for 5754 miles I have achieved 19.65 mpg [based on Disco’s onboard computer’s readings]. Observations are that it’s clearly influenced by road type and wind conditions. Motorways are best despite the higher average speed; roundabouts and fluctuating speeds are very damaging. Best, virtually all Mway 125 mile journey towing was 22.6 recently post enhancement.
Now at 13292 total miles with an overall consumption of 21.76 mpg based on purchased litres. Derived figure for solo use is 23.8 mpg. Virtually no motorway solo miles.
HSE, diesel Auto.

Yes Norto,
Took the Coromal Camper. No problems at all with the corrigations on the Gibb River Rd. No Tyre, suspension, dust or any problems for that matter. All went perfectly. Most of the track had not been graded since the wet season, so it was still fairly rough for the most part. Still able to tow at 40 to 75km/h to stay on top of the corrigations. Put the Terrain Response on to Gravel rd mode, grip and control on the corrigations was excellent.

Did 2000 miles across France over 3 weeks. Brilliant. Yes the white vans that do overtake are worse than me passing an artic. Managed 21mpg, not bad for an Auto Diesel, towing 1.7 ton Caravan, with four bikes on back and two kayaks on the roof, plus kids and Mrs - almost 5 tons in total and cruise control set at 65mph. Hills taken in stride and even on a steep incline the speed seldom dropped on the approach incline.
2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Barnie

Do you have the bikes on the back of the van? I am waiting for a Maxxrax but had thought of a rack on the caravan itself. What bars do you have for the kayaks - again, have kayak but no roof bars yet?

This is without a doubt the best tow car I have owned Very Happy 2900 miles of towing heaven. 600 miles in wet wales Sad the rest on French auto routes Smile
The trip back from Perpignan was ace left at 7am and arrived in Calais at 9pm, with only fuel and pee stops. Wink Fuel average for the whole trip 17.3 not bad for a big outfit (Swift Coqueror Six adults and a huge roof box etc etc etc)
Tyre pressure 46 psi and serious nose weight kept it on the black stuff at high speed on the Auto routes.
WELL DONE LR Great product Very Happy
D4 3.0 HSE cameras,Hybrid TV, 20" alloys, heated wheel, privacy, Tow pack.
Departed RRS TDV8 HSE Full Arden kit in TEAL and colour coded everything.
Departed Disco 3 2.7 HSE

I never drive faster than I can see!
