12 plate D4. Only one cam belt changed

Please may I have your thoughts?
I went to look at a 2013 (on a 12 plate) D4 HSE over the weekend. Its on at £20k with 99k miles so looks toppy on price. The used-car salesman showed me the bill for the cam belt change they did. They only did the front one, and he said they never did the back one because it would not cause engine failure if it broke and wasn't worth the extra time and cost.
With respect to this issue, how do you recommend I proceed? If I buy should I factor in the cost of that belt change. Should I accept it will be fine. Or should I steer clear?

He is talking Censored , it should have been done, If this is the way they treat customers then I would not trust them to get it done right. if you can knock off the price of the rear belt then it might be worth a punt, but if it was me, I would find another seller.

He's factually correct.

The rear belt failing will not cause catastrophic engine failure if it breaks.

Also working down the back of the engine blind, its possible to do more damage than improvement.


No reason to avoid the car for this reason. At least he has been honest

I disagree if the rear belt snaps it can cause a lot of damage to the rear of the engine, taking out all sorts, has as happened in the past, just ask Disco Mikey. They dont want to do the rear belt because its tight, fiddly, and does take a lot longer than a D3.

Yes I know. It can happen that IF it goes it can cut the the wiring loom.
Or it could just break
Or it could last to 150k miles

Its all about risk.

There are bigger things to worry about on a D4

The rear belts aren't due to be done until 7 years old or 112,000 miles (16,000 miles per year).

They will need doing but you've got almost a year of motoring to do before they're due. MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!
MY2012 D4 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - retired to a new home

Hi

I have just done my rear belt, although a bit tight to get to not the worst job in the world. My car is on about 70K and 6.5 years old, I would have been very worried had I not known the condition of the belt, however when I took it off it looked like new, no sign of any cracking but for peace of mind I now know it will be good for another 7 years. Thumbs Up

I have seen belts break before their recommended replacement interval...

It wouldn’t put me off the car, but it should be a priority item, IMHO

And if it does snap, it can cause many £0,000’s of damage.... My D3 Build Thread
