Want to bring this thread back to life briefly.
A specialist in my area has recommended use of 10W/40 on older D3 TDV6 engines. I politely declined in favour of OEM oil spec recommendation - but is anyone being advised/doing the same thing?
I use full synthetic 5w40 in mine. This grade is specified as suitable by Citroën for their version of the TDV6.Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Or alternatively try it and see, then let us know how it goes. What's the worst that can happen?
5w40 in mine. Working just fine. Especially considering it's now done 176K miles Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

A5 is the replacement spec for A1
5/30 A5 magnatec was on special offer a couple of months ago at ASDA 21 pounds for 4 litres.
Thats weird there were no replies, then I reply and all of a sudden 4 replies show up?

Here you go. This is from the Citroën service manual. According to PSA, the TDV6 isn't that oil fussy. It doesn't even have to use a full synthetic!
In a Citroën car, bottom end failure is unheard of.

I read a report last week of I think a C5 with bottom end smashed. Report was I think 2-3 years old.

The internal tolerances are too fine in the TDV6 engine to run a thicker 10W40 oil
Stick with the correct grade and spec, or better
Personally, I run 5W30 Fully Synthetic, Low Ash (or D4 oil) in my D3
Found this old thread when searching for some oil answers...
LR servicemen here often recommend 10W40 for TDV6.
To be precise... in new engine 5W40, in older one 10W40.
They claim that it's much better than 5W30 which is too "waterly" which is good for fuel consumption (making the emission limits) but not good for the engine.
Normally, I would just use what's prescribed.
With TDV6s dying quite often (probably while used with standard oil), I'm not so sure which one to use.
