I dont know why dealers have such problems. rear belt takes less than an hour and whole timing belt job is only 3.5 hours total. 105k service is easy to complete in a day even with extra jobs if needed.

Run my own garage and have done 3 d3 timing belt changes. Some of the run of the mill family cars have worse timing belt procedures so i find these quite easy.

That's what I wanted to hear!
Planning to change them myself in the near future.
- Any pointers for a DIY job?
- Do you really need to drain the coolant and disconnect the hose to get to the timing belt?
- Is access to the rear fuel pump belt difficult?CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

According to the LR tech service instructions, you will need to:-
disconnect the battery
remove the fan shroud
remove the fan
remove the starter motor (to allow insertion of a tool to lock the flywheel (manual) or flexplate (auto)
remove the timing belt cover (which requires removal of the coolant cylinder head hose, the accessory belt, disconneciont of the RHS EGR valve coolant hose, removal of the coolant pump)
You will also need special service tools Timing Pin (manual or Automatic) Timing Pim - Camshaft Pulleys, Check Pin
These are usually available from E Bay for around £60 (or rental for about £12 a week)
I will try and post the full instructions as PDF's next week in my gallery Never get mad - get even !!

I have the manuals Steve. Got them from another member.
Did not speak to anyone who actually did it.
Gtrhaggart might have some pointers before I venture into this.CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Sealey just brought out cheaper timing kit VSE5000. Search online can be bought for under £40.
Pump belt is fidley. Remove top cover then you will find a wiring loom at the back with a "t" shape plastic piece on it. Cut the tye wraps and tape attaching this and the loom will push back gently just enough to give access.
The pump belt cover is only clipped on and the pump has no timing marks so cannot be timed wrong and the tensioner is spring loaded so just fit belt and then tensioner then pull the pin.
When doing main front cam belt replace the 2 deflection pulleys £15 approx each.
You wont lose much coolant when taking pipe off so no need to drain system.

Got the D3 back after 5 days at the dealers and belts fixed and in the boot as requested...however it took 3 days longer than anticipated, they charged £800 and I feel they tried to stitch me up avoid doing the belts all together
