Is it body off to fix things like the D3/4?

Do those ingenium engines have timing belts?

Some 18" rims would be good so LT tyres can be fitted.

We need these in Aus as they have run out of money to fix the roads here. Rolling Eyes

The D5 is a monocoque, there's no separate chassis like the D4.

Technically, it's a unibody Wink

A true monocoque has all its strength in its visible surface, like an eggshell or a motorcycle crash helmet, while a unibody has an underlying structure made from box sections and the like.

It's a halfway house between a true monocoque and a body with a separate chassis, like the D4.

The D4 is a "chassis with a unibody" - I think that's how LR described it. "Chuffing heavy" is how everyone else describes the concept. Rolling with laughter

Strength, durability, ease of repair, practical internal space, big loading apertures, large glass areas and superb visibility were also equally high priorities as weight when it was originally designed though Rolling Eyes

LR products -

Are a monocoque as opposed to a chassis frame.
They do have a "frame" that carries body panels.
I wonder how much the body panels contribute to the strength of the whole thing ?

I'm amazed that LR abandoned the hydroformed body floor pan
Maybe it will re surface in Defender.

Whatever construction method as long as it's strong enough, lasts the life of the vehicle, gives some benefit like economy or stiffness for suspension geometry & of course Safety.
Not a choice item it's what's on sale.
If the D5 being lighter doesn't tow as adeptly as it's direct predecessor (because of vehicle weight) as it'is another thing entirely.
D3/4 is a hard act to follow as regards towing not down to anything but good design, with some smart electronics. Proven system.
At the head of the thread, Russell has given some honest feedback. Which is beneficial to my quest.
The D5 part of the site is giving loads of really candid data, which to me is well worth reading as it gets posted up.

That's a good point, I suppose they are. I wonder if an ant were to be fabricated with a carbon fibre monocoque, would it be any faster, lighter or stronger? It would probably be too time consuming, expensive, slow and hard to build in sufficient numbers to make a difference though! Wink

Calm down. My "Disco in a dress" has the same heavy but immensely strong design except it's got a smaller bum. Laughing

The D5 is designed to be stronger than previous models, therefore described by Landrover to be their best off-roading car so far.

Oops, we may have a misunderstanding here! I meant that before weight was everything, there were lots of other things that were just as important when these were both designed Thumbs Up

That sounds good, although they did also say that there would be "no loss of practicality" as well Confused

Have they published any comparative torsional rigidity figures to back this up with, or are we just going to take their word for it and hope for the best again?
