05D3 - internal heating
Hi there,
Finally getting a bit cheesed off with internal heating in my D3HSE. Had it over two years now and rarely does it annoy me as I tend not to feel the cold, but this morning I had the smallies on board to school and outside temp was minus two.
Air from the vents has never been toasty, if left on auto with the temps up high, it does not get warm or hot inside. Did the passenger side stepper motor last year and at least both sides are nearly the same temp, but at best it is luke warm.
Have read before about flushing heater matrix, is that a big job? Remember contacting the previous owner (I bought through a non LR dealer) and she mentioned one of the reasons she traded was that it was cold inside and kids hated it so this has been an issue for some time.
Is there anything I can check to diagnose further? Engine temp gets up ok and overall the D3 is brilliant, well looked after mind you!
Thanks
DaveJ

They take a while to warm up does it have a fuel burning heater fitted if it does you may be able to fit a remote to it to start to warm it before you get in search on the website for FBH or click on the info banner where it says fuel burning heater Discovery 3 se gone

you could check to see if the 'sponge in the air sensor intake in the cabin' thing was done? relevant heating TSB's (from the wiki) :

Davej does your fbh work ok? My previous d3 struggled to get warm on cold days before I mended the fbh! D3 x2 now gone

Quite a few things can cause this. Actuators, air lock, thermostat, sludge or interior sensor are all potential causes. I've even come across a bad control panel or 2 and incorrectly routed coolant pipes.
You need to trace where the heat is going, otherwise we would just be guessing.

FBH working with remote (but not this morning as was down to 68 miles to empty!).
Will look into the TSB's thanks
Robbie, is there somewhere you could point me to in terms of diagnosing a little more.
- Actuators for air dispersal seem to operate ok, it is easy to divert to windscreen, feet, face vents etc so that rules those out I think
- Next would be blenders, I can get it very cold (nice during summer), mild, luke warm but never toasty so they are probably working ok (?)
Any way to access or test the internal sensor?
Air lock and sludge would be where I am leaning towards, is there a process to resolve?

Just use your hands to feel the coolant pipes, radiator and heat exchanger for heat. If the radiator is getting warm when it shouldn't then it is the thermostat. If the pipes to the heater are hot going in with little coming out then you are looking at the heat exchanger. If the pipes to the heater are not getting hot but the coolant pipes are hot elsewhere then suspect a blockage / air lock. If the coolant is very hot from the engine but not elsewhere then consider the water pump etc etc.
If you have an IR gun or IR camera then things are very easy and you can keep your hands clean.

Robbie,
Apologies for ignorance, can you direct me to the relevant pipework. After a run, the pipes around the radiator are hot but not too hot to touch. There are some pipes that appear to be running towards the cabin on the drivers side of the top of the engine, are these going to the heater?
Any help in diagnosing further would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Had a root around under the bonnet, the flow and return (Heater hose in and out on the diagrams) are nice and hot so heat is heading in but appears not to be getting into or through the matrix - am I correct?
Should I seek someone here that can flush it? Is there anything that I need to highlight?
Thanks in advance

Had the system flushed by ex-dealer / indie although I reckon he just flushed the whole coolant system from talking with him - the Disco was in to get the rear brake pipes replaced. Anyways it did not help. He also swapped out a thermostat, but as the pipes heading for the firewall are hot, I still think it is the heat exchange / matrix.
When I call for more heat, the fans ramp up but just blow cool air which would also rule out sensor troubles (?). Anyone replace the matrix, is it expensive.
Also the fan is now beginning to squeal / squeak a bit.
Grrrr

When was the last time you replaced the pollen filter? They can may a real difference to the amount of air flow, not directly the heat but with more air flow it would make a difference,if you are already blowing cold then it may make things worse.
D3 is big cabin but I don't recall it ever being a struggle to get it too warm in there. When the FBH is running warms up really quick too.IID PRO

Thanks for reply, pollen filter was in last year, problem predates that though. No shortage of air coming through the system.
